bass culture reach that magnificent milestone of 50 releases with an extra special ep from someone who has become part of labels inner circle, the infallible mr g. set up in 2009 by paris stalwart djulz, bass culture records has maintained a consistently high level of music, crossing from techno into house and back again, always with a focus on quality over quantity. mr g delivers two special gems from his arsenal of weaponary to mark the 50th bsss culture release. the first, * transient* sees mr g in contemplative mood, taking a studied approach with this deep, soulful cut. softened pads are drizzled over a punchy low end, with tough, crisp beats supporting a stirring vocal which urges everybody to get up on their feet. the nineties organ lick gives it an almost sorrowful feel, and those pads continue to takes us up to the skies. a beauty. on the flip, * crumple zone* goes straight for the jugular with a driving b-line, alarming stabs and finger-clicking percussion to get that head nodding. combined with garbled, hypnotic vocal clips, its a mesmerising, eyes down cut for the late night heads. towards the latter part of the track, a naughty riff comes in and adds another layer of sleaze to proceedings. and there you have it, mr g proves yet again why he is such a all-round don and bass culture celebrates 50 releases with panache.

debut lp offering from london rap group jungle brown. having featured on sbtv with their ep ‘take one’, this lp builds on a strong foundation. sample heavy, with strong saxophone performances from ayo odia, the instrumentation is rich and thick in texture. lyrically the group go from light and playful, to deep and introspective with great subtlety. keep it movin (a1) is a light reflection of the group moving from bournemouth to london, while ‘in the city’ (b1) is a gritty anthem detailing the arrival to the city. having a strong performance record behind them as well, the group’s reach is good, both in the uk and abroad.

ruhig comes back after one year with particles ep as first installment of a double ep on midgar. the record opens with particles, an atmospheric detroit influenced cut made out of synthlines dropping like voodoo spells, epic pads and fragmented beats. eddying follows up with a more direct approach to the dancefloor, 4/4 stomping beat and thin hi-hats backed by lasers and passionate ambiances. etere on the b-side gives the records an halfway breath, sounds like a late afternoon walk in the fields of a southern countryside village (with constructions going on somewhere nearby), before to start again with the sweet and eerie perle, where droney pinching drums are flooded by a swarm of dreamy fireflies. idiom to close the ep with a fast syncopated cut, showing the approach of ruhig to any form of musical expression and genre, far from traditional ambient or deep techno and going further, to reach out daring and more demanding levels.

von der reeperbahn ins künstlerviertel - von großer freiheit zur münchner freiheit, von hamburg nach münchen -- genauer gesagt nach schwabing, dem ortsteil münchens, der in den 60er- und 70er-jahren aufgrund der kulturellen vielfalt abseits des sonst eher konservativen münchens (natürlich -- man ist ja in bayern) bei den hipstern schwer angesagt war und noch heute vom damaligen ruhm zehrt. den dazu passenden soundtrack schwabing affairs liefert einmal mehr das kölner diggler label (ob der dritte teil der serie porz affairs heißen wird?), welches erneut die archive nach soundtracks aus der halbwelt durchwühlt hat, um den zumindest musikalischen flair schwabings wiederzubeleben.

harry j galt als einer der wichtigsten produzenten jamaikas, betätigte sich aber auch selbst als musiker. mit seinen allstars genannten studiomusikern brachte er drei instrumental-alben heraus. das debüt gibt es jetzt als re-release auf vinyl in 180g. *liquidator* erschien 1969 und wurde vor allem in großbritannien ein großer erfolg. der titeltrack zählt zu den wichtigsten songs der damals entstehenden skinhead-kultur und schaffte es auf platz 9 der uk singles charts. weitere highlights auf *liquidator* sind die rocksteady/reggae-versionen des beatles-songs *dont let me down* und des bardot/gainsbourg-duetts *je t aime*. in seinem harry j studio nahmen u.a. bob marley & the wailers auf. dort empfing harry auch musikgrößen wie die rolling stones, the who oder grace jones.
